This course is designed to provide the student with the background of how to evaluate and treat patients with disorders of the temporomandibular joint. They will be taught basic clinical skills for diagnosing and treating specific syndromes affecting the temporomandibular joint by recognizing signs and symptoms related to those syndromes. Through lecture and demonstration, the participants will be covering topics in anatomy, biomechanics and pathology related to the temporomandibular joint. Differential diagnosis will be taught to assist with competency for direct access. Intervention strategies will be taught based on current evidence to remedy these impairments.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be expected to verbally, practically, or in written presentation demonstrate the following:

  • Describe anatomy, biomechanics, and arthrokinematics of the temporomandibular joint
  • Palpate with skill and accuracy the bony landmarks of the temporomandibular joint
  • Develop a comprehensive treatment program to treat disorders of the temporomandibular joint
  • Be able to differentially diagnose to know when treatment is appropriate

  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the various pathological conditions of the temporomandibular joint, including: etiology, prognosis, and their implications on manual therapy treatment.
  • Engage in peer evaluation through interactive laboratory sessions involving, but not limited to, segmental mobility testing, stability testing, postural assessment, joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and motion testing of the region under study.
  • Appropriately utilize various manual therapy techniques for evaluation and treatment of the region under study, including but not limited to joint mobilizations, soft tissue mobilizations, accessory motion testing, ROM testing, tissue specific exercises, and appropriate home exercises.

  • Analyze and interpret scientific principles related to applied biomechanics of the temporomandibular joint.
  • Discuss and analyze the anatomy of the temporomandibular joint.
  • Analyze and interpret the signs and symptoms related to temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

This course will include lecture, demonstration, interactive laboratory sessions, group discussion and review/critique of scientific literature.
