COURSE DESCRIPTION:

This course is designed to provide the student with the background of how to evaluate and treat patients with disorders of the lumbar spine. They will be taught basic clinical skills for diagnosing and treating specific syndromes affecting the lumbar spine by recognizing signs and symptoms related to those syndromes. Through lecture and demonstration, the student will be covering topics in anatomy, biomechanics and pathology related to the lumbar spine. Differential diagnosis will be taught to assist with competency for direct access. Specific movement impairment syndromes related to the lumbar spine will be introduced, as well as intervention strategies based on current evidence to remedy these impairments.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

Upon completion of this course, the student will be expected to verbally, practically, or in written presentation demonstrate the following:

 Content:

  • Describe anatomy, biomechanics, and arthrokinematics of the lumbar spine
  • List indications and contra indications for joint mobilizations in the lumbar spine
  • Palpate with skill and accuracy the bony landmarks of the lumbar spine
  • Identify through functional movement patterns impaired movements in the lumbar spine
  • Develop a comprehensive treatment program to treat disorders of the lumbar spine
  • Be able to differentially diagnose to know when treatment is appropriate

Process:

  • Develop a knowledge and understanding of the various pathological conditions of the lumbar spine, including: etiology, prognosis, and their implications on manual therapy treatment.
  • Engage in peer evaluation through interactive laboratory sessions involving, but not limited to, segmental mobility testing, stability testing, postural assessment, joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and motion testing of the region under study.
  • Appropriately utilize various manual therapy techniques for evaluation and treatment of the region under study, including but not limited to joint mobilizations, soft tissue mobilizations, accessory motion testing, ROM testing, tissue specific exercises, and appropriate home exercises.

 Integrative:

  • Analyze and interpret scientific principles related to applied biomechanics of the lumbar spine.
  • Discuss and analyze the anatomy of the lumbar spine.
  • Analyze and interpret the signs and symptoms related to lumbar dysfunction.

COURSE METHODS:

This course will include lecture, demonstration, interactive laboratory sessions, group discussion and review/critique of scientific literature.
