Residency

An orthopaedic residency program is a postprofessional planned learning experience, approved through the American Board of Physical Therapy Residency and Fellowship, comprised of a curriculum encompassing the essential knowledge, skills, and responsibilities of an advanced physical therapist.

Mission Statement:

Our mission is to advance orthopaedic physical therapy practice, by enhancing clinical reasoning, knowledge and skills of residency-trained physical therapists to help create leaders in our field, working toward improving the quality of physical therapy offered to the communities we serve.

Goals:

  • The program will provide an advanced, evidence based orthopedic curriculum to inform quality patient/client care.
  • The program will maintain ABPTRFE accreditation.
  • The Resident will be provided with high quality, consistent experience with a variety of patient populations as required in the current Orthopaedic DRP.
  • Residency program will be sustainable
  • The program will provide quality didactic and clinical education to enhance the Resident’s knowledge, skills and affective behavior in alignment with the Orthopedic DRP.
  • Graduates will become leaders in our profession.

Curriculum Design:

The curriculum is designed to encompass all aspects of orthopaedic physical therapy practice.  The curriculum consists of 6 live courses, 11 live webinars, and 5 independent study courses provided by the Orthopaedic Section of the APTA. The Resident will also participate in virtual weekly journal clubs and case reviews in small groups. Program completion requires a minimum of 12 months and a maximum of 14 months with 150 one-on-one supervised clinical hours with a Mentor and 1500 total patient care hours. This allows the Resident the opportunity to practice in collaboration with a Mentor to truly assess if the Resident is properly applying what they are learning throughout the program.
