COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course is designed to provide the participant with the background of how to evaluate and treat patients recovering from upper extremity injuries, including shoulder stabilization surgery, rotator cuff repair, and UCL reconstruction. Criterion-based protocols and problem solving will be taught to ensure critical milestones are achieved during the rehabilitation process. Through lecture and demonstration, the participant will be instructed on topics in anatomy, biomechanics and pathology related to the upper extremity. Lastly, case studies and group discussion will be used to facilitate plan of care development for successful return to sport following upper extremity injury.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon completion of this course, the student will be expected to verbally, practically, or in written presentation demonstrate the following:
Content:
- Describe anatomy, biomechanics, and arthrokinematics of the upper extremity joints
- Identify post-operative red flags, including deep venous thrombosis, and infection
- Perform effective post-operative physical therapy evaluation at multiple milestones
- Develop a comprehensive treatment program to treat specific surgical procedures
- Apply appropriate return to sports testing criteria during case study discussions
Process:
- Develop a knowledge and understanding of the various mechanisms of injury affecting the upper extremity and associated rehabilitation considerations.
- Engage in peer evaluation through interactive laboratory sessions involving, but not limited to, joint mobility testing, stability testing, postural assessment, soft tissue mobilization, and motion testing of the region under study.
- Appropriately utilize various manual therapy techniques for evaluation and treatment of the region under study, including but not limited to joint mobilizations, soft tissue mobilizations, accessory motion testing, ROM testing, tissue specific exercises, and appropriate home exercises.
Integrative:
- Use information gained through physical examination, tissue healing time, and functional capacity to develop and implement safe, effective treatment plans for the regions under study.
- Discuss relevant anatomy and surgical considerations in a group setting as part of a complete plan of care.
COURSE METHODS:
This course will include lecture, demonstration, interactive laboratory sessions, group discussion and review/critique of scientific literature.
